When it comes to the types of braces to choose from, the number of options, where they go, and what they do can seem a little overwhelming at times. Your orthodontist will use his experience and particular expertise to explain them to you and guide you through your options.
It can be helpful to know about some factors that make different treatments (or combinations of them) more suitable to your particular needs and how they will influence your orthodontist’s decision-making process.
The Bite
As important as your smile is to your orthodontist, he is primarily concerned with giving you a healthy bite. There are many common problems (as well as more complex issues) and often the severity of the malocclusion (or “bad bite”) will influence the type of braces your orthodontist feels is the best choice.
Even with the changes in technology available today, some of the newer types of braces might not cater to your particular orthodontic concern. The Invisalign braces, for example, are generally not as effective on more serious orthodontic cases as traditional style braces.
The Look
We looked at the “best type of braces” in a recent post and many might be surprised to learn that good old-fashioned metal braces took top honors. But that might not suit everyone’s particular tastes if other models are a viable alternative.
And it is worth remembering that those metal braces that are the brunt of every 80s movie aren’t what they used to be. They are now more compact and more comfortable, and many younger wearers use the opportunity to accessorize them with different colored bands.
Professionals and athletes might need something less visible or less likely to be damaged as part of their daily lives, so lingual braces (placed behind the teeth) or Invisalign (removable clear plastic trays called aligners) could suit their needs better.
Additionally, for those looking for a less noticeable choice, ceramic braces are an option, too.
The Cost
Overall cost can be a contributing factor. In addition to installation, scheduled visits and readjustments, the type of braces can also inform the wearer’s decision. The more cutting edge the orthodontic technology is the more expensive it will be, and this will need to be accounted for when it comes time to make the decision of which braces best suit the wearer.
Also, some orthodontists may not be equipped to offer particular types of treatment and so might not be available to you.
When it comes to those factors that determine the type of braces that will best suit you, it can be helpful to think of yourself as unique and focus on the fact that no matter which braces you get you will have the smile you’ve always dreamed about.
